Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). She made her first appearances on television as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to perform by her parents until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the strain it might cause. Perry claimed she felt nervous to be an actor in high school but began doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry home to California, where theater jobs were available. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013 Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's show The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. The same year, she played a young model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
